Return policies: read them before you buy
There's no general federal right to return a purchase.
Many people assume they can always return things. In most cases, returns depend on the store's own policy, so it's worth checking before you buy.
Check
- How many days you have
- Whether you get cash back, a card refund or store credit
- Restocking fees, especially on electronics
- Who pays return shipping online
- Final sale and clearance exclusions
Good to know
The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule gives three days to cancel certain sales made at your home or at temporary locations. Most store and online purchases aren't covered.
