Hi there,
This issue's trick: "spend $15 more for free shipping"
Free-shipping thresholds are set just above what many people put in their cart. Adding a $15 item to save $6 of shipping only saves money if you were going to buy that item anyway. Otherwise, you've spent $9 more.
Try this instead: keep a running "add-on" list of things you genuinely need, and use those to reach a threshold. Or pick up in store. More tricks in 12 sales tricks, and how to see through them.
A habit worth trying
Before buying anything over $50 that you didn't plan, put it in your cart and close the tab. Come back tomorrow. If you still want it, check the real price with our deal calculator.
Reader question
"Is the extended warranty at checkout worth it?" Usually not. Check the manufacturer's warranty and your credit card's benefits first; many cards extend warranties already. See Extended warranties: usually skip them.
Happy (thoughtful) shopping,
